Pray Without CeasingPray without ceasing – 1 Thessalonians 5:17

This verse exhorts us to pray continually. It reminds us that prayer needs to become a way of life for us. As we go about our day, we should do so in an attitude of prayer.

As we learn to “pray continually” we learn the lesson that we need to be “poor in spirit.” In other words, we need to be continually dependent upon God. The result is that prayer becomes as natural for us as breathing.

We must have air to live, and we must have prayer to live!

Acts 17:28 says it this way …

In Him we live and move and have our being.

Everything must begin and end with God. He doesn’t need us to pray for His sake; He wants us to pray for our own sake

A.W. Pink puts it this way …

Prayer is not so much an act as it is an attitude – an attitude of dependency, dependency upon God.

What is your attitude about prayer?

Do you need prayer like you need air?

Show your dependency on God by communing with Him throughout your day and as you do, pray for those you know who need God’s hand of provision for their situation.

Since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Hebrews 10:22-25

Praise God for …

  • Jesus, your High Priest.
  • His purity and holiness
  • The precious blood that was shed on the cross by Jesus
  • The gift of Jesus as your King of Kings and Lord of Lords

Thank God for …

  • Being a faithful promise keeper
  • The assurance of your salvation
  • The shed blood of Christ Jesus
  • His love that is in you
  • The encouragement from other believers

Ask God to …

  • Prepare you for the week ahead
  • Empower you through the Holy Spirit to speak boldly about Him to others with humble and gentle love
  • Use you as an instrument of encouragement, reconciliation, and peace this week

So Abraham called the name of that place, “The LORD will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided.” – Genesis 22:14

God is Jehovah-jireh …

Inherent with this name and character of God is His desire to provide for His people. In the Hebrew jireh means “to see.” When paired with the covenant name of God, Jehovah, this name literally means that Jehovah will see to it. He sees and foresees. He is omniscient; He sees our beginning and our end, and He makes provision for us in light of who He is.

God provided us with a perfect sacrifice through His Son, Jesus. God saw us in our sin and made the perfect provision for us. As we celebrate the Easter season, think about Jesus as God’s perfect provision for you and for me. What does this mean to you?

What does this mean to you in prayer?

It means that you can rest in the fact that Jehovah-jireh will see to your need. He will provide for your needs, plan your way, make a way, and take care of you. Just as He provided for your salvation, planned for it and made a way for it through Christ. Isn’t that a comforting reality?

God will see to it. He will see to you. Think about that as you pray for the needs of yourself and others this week. Jehovah, the self-existent, covenant keeping God, promises to make the best way and provide in the best way for those who are His. Pray confidently and take refuge in this comforting character of God.

And my God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19

Read these words of Jesus prior to his crucifixion in John 17:15-19 …

I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.

Confession is an important part of prayer. Just as Jesus cleansed the temple in Matthew 21:12-17, believers must cleanse themselves as the Holy Spirit of God now resides in our bodies. As Easter approaches take time this week to reflect on the perfection of Christ and the imperfections of man. In light of who Jesus is, what confession do you need to make to the Father in order to be pure, holy and blameless before Him?

David wrote a beautiful Psalm of confession in Psalm 51. Pray this Psalm to the Lord inserting your name. Then ask God to show you any specific un-confessed sins that need to be brought before Him.

Ask God:

  • Are my eyes seeing anything that is not pleasing to You?
  • Are my ears hearing anything that is not pleasing to You?
  • Is my mouth saying anything that is not pleasing to You?
  • Are my hands doing anything that is not pleasing to You?
  • Are my thoughts and attitudes in line with You?

Is not my word like fire, declares the LORD, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces? Jeremiah 23:29

The Word of God is the fulcrum upon which the lever of prayer is placed, and by which things are mightily moved. There would seem to be in prayer the capacity for going even beyond the Word, of getting even beyond His promise, into the very presence of God, Himself. –E.M. Bounds

Do you use God’s Word as you pray? The following verses are wonderful to pray back to God. Use these in your prayer time this week or find some on your own. Discover the power the Word of God has to affect the way you pray and the way God responds.

  • Lord, help _________ dwell in the shelter of the Most High and find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1
  • God give _________ the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of You, enlighten the eyes of ___________’s heart so _____________ may know what is the hope to which You have called him/her. Ephesians 1:17-18
  • Lord, I pray that ________ would be rooted and established in Your love, and that __________ would have power together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep the love of Christ is, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge so that _________ may be filled with all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:17-19
  • Lord, would you direct ___________’s heart to the love of God and the steadfastness of Christ. 2 Thessalonians 3:5

This Godhis way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.  Psalm 18:30

As you pray this week remember that God is perfect, and His ways are perfect. He keeps His word, and He shields His people. Because of this you can praise God for who He is and thank Him for all that He allows to touch your life. Whether you are in a place of rest and peace, in a time of illness or distress, or in a time of waiting and wondering, God’s ways are still perfect. He is able to shield you from the enemy, from negative thinking, and from fear and doubt if you will come to Him for refuge and relief. Remember that God does not always respond to us as we see fit but rather in His perfect way, always drawing us to Himself.

This week as you pray …

  • Praise God for who He is!
  • Ask God to help you or someone you know seek His perfect way in a current situation.
  • Turn to God and allow Him to shield you as you take refuge in Him.

Blessings,

Jacqueline Heider
